To be an artist and live inside and about Petrovaradin Fortress, which itself is a par excellence architectural achievement, is certainly a sign of its own kind. That elusive blend of tradition, history, legends, warmth and the artistic easiness of existence is only possible to experience at the Atelier of fine-art photographer Dragan Kurucic. As every underground tunnel in several corridors, his atelier disseminates and gathers accumulated stories about the soldiers who, under arms and with their horses, used to live as long as one month in its well-indented bowls, mined traps for attackers, the communication routes leading into the bowls of the Earth through the four parallel levels…

You will be amazed at the true stories about the everyday life of the citizens of Petrovaradin in several successive centuries, whose parts, like picture-books, continue on each other along the walls, floors, and ceiling of the Atelier: the weapons from the time of the French Revolution, the armaments prior to the First World War and after it, the photographs of soldier “companies”, soldiers’ personal hygiene kits, the miraculous mechanism of the clocks and watches of different epochs, the parts of the accessories of a wine-grower or a cook of a bishop…

Everything is soaked with history and the traditions of the Austrian, Hungarian, Serbian, Turkish, etc. heritage. But, not one single story about the life inside the Fortress and around it can be told without the delights that food provides, and wine confirms. The delicacies prepared according to the recipes of some times gone will only make the pictures of the time long gone even livelier, if you make such an agreement with your host.
