Established in 1961 as crafting workshop for tapestry weaving, „Atelier 61“ is a unique cultural institution of its kind in Serbia but also in the region of West Balkans, and the only one in Serbia with its own production (workshop, gallery, museum collection). It is one of only five similar cultural institutions in Europe.
It was founded by textile designer Etelka Tobolka and famous Serbian painter, tapestry and mosaicist Boško Petrović with the support of the city of Novi Sad, who declared „Atelje 61“ a cultural institution of special social importance. During the 60-year history, more than 900 tapestries were made in „Atelier 61“ in co-operation with close to 300 artists. „Atelje 61“ thus has a National Collection of Tapestries, which is considered one of the largest collections in this area.
Visitors of the Petrovaradin Fortress can visit the „Atelier 61“, attend the process of creating tapestries and admire the National collection of tapestries – every working day from 9 am to 2 pm.
