A Visit to Mali Zvornik

Mali Zvornik is located on the bank of the impetuous Drina river, at the foot of Orlovina Hill, where a Byzantine fortification, and later the town of Serbian Prince Časlav, used to be. Apart from the extraordinary fishing terrains, the town’s biggest attraction is “The Underground Town of the Karađorđević Dynasty”, where young King Peter II spent his last days in his homeland.

“The Underground Town of the Karađorđević Dynasty” is an exceptional place of a great historical worth. It is a 5000-m2 complex with a large number of rooms and a maze of corridors. It was constructed in secrecy as the shelter for the Government of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the Supreme Command and the Royal Family in the case of a war and a threat of war. Its accommodation capacity was three to five thousand people. Natural rock was used for its construction and in the documents it is mentioned under a secret encoded name – “a stone girl”. The works that had begun in 1930 were stopped in 1934, after the assassination of King Alexander I in Marseille. In April 1941, young King Peter II spent his last Serbian days here.

Town – Watchtower

The remains of a huge Byzantine fortification were found on Orlovine Hill. The most significant discovery are the remains of one of the biggest churches in Serbia of that epoch. Archaeologists expressed the assumption that the Ad Drinum river stop, the crossroads between Pannonia and Dalmatia, and the most important watchtower from which trade in the ore that had been transported by river to Ancient Syrmium, had been located exactly here.
